I like to fish in fresh water off shore and don’t have a boat. I have some inexpensive Shakespeare spinning reels and prefer light weight 6 or 8 lb line cause I don’t ever catch big fish. I get a lot of crappie (11-12 inch) , large mouth (1.5 to 3 lbs) and some blue catfish (2 or 3 lbs).
I would like to be able to cast a little further, although I seem to catch most fish close to shore. They say low memory line will help cast further. Right now I use Cajun Red Line and it is OK but I wonder if something is better.
Can anyone recommend a good line for me? Is braided line better than monofilament, even for spinning reels? I’ve never used it.
There were so many different lines at the store my head was spinning.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
For Bill T- Lewisville Lake & Ray Roberts Lake in north Texas. LOL Best Crappie fishing is during spring and early summer when they come in to spawn.

1 foot crappie, im goin where you are! anyway, i have always had good luck with stren original monofilament. cheap and it works great. braided lines are great too however, you will need to learn a couple new knots to use it (some mono knots will not hold up with braided line) but i would definatley recommend using Stren!

All different lines offer different characteristics best for certain situations. Monfilament 8-12 pound is probably the best all around line for what you seem to be catching.
Check out this previous answer I gave. Explains all about different lines.

Yea a Stren mono or Berkley Trilene mono will work for you. Braid can actually lessen your casting distance due to the friction it has going through your rod guides. It also is a pain to cut and knots can be an issue I only use braid when I fishing real heavy cover or real muddy water in close distance. Fluorocarbon is good for clear water but does not have much stretch and can give you fits especially on a spinning reel, if the spool is overloaded it will jump off like an insane slinky. I think Berkley makes a mono called Smooth Cast. Also practice casting at home using a 1/4oz or 1/2oz sinker. Casting a fishing rod is like a golf swing you get better the more you practice.

well i personally wouldnt use braid for pike fishing because you will feel every knock and thud. the thing with braid is has no strech. unlike mono. and it also depene on which size pike your going for/ i would recommend// 15 pound mono and 10 wire trace. o yea dont forget ya forceps lol
