Does anyone have some expertise with depthfinders and fishfinders?

My husband is looking for a depthfinder/fishfinder for a small lake in Western PA. Fishing includes crappie, stripper, walleye and catfish. The systems that are out there are a little confusing for me (I am buying for a gift). I want to find a good one but I would also like to stay under $250, is this possible? I figure it must be something like buying a computer, so it’s not like he needs depths of 800′, but lots of the systems claim that and also speeds of 70mph. Our lake doesn’t allow motors past 20hp :-) . Thanks in advance for your help.

How to catch a 4′ catfish in shallow, stump filled water- drag tight or loose?

Yesterday I hooked a 4′ flathead on a panfish gold hook LOL I was not expecting anything THAT large and was awestruck when what I thought was a tight drag setting was simply not tight enough to keep this monster from pulling out to the left and back around a stump and to the right before I tightened my drag. At that point my gear shot out of the creek back at me and I recovered all of my gear, but I want to go back and try again and would like to know if I should just let it go loose on drag and keep it loose to maneuver my line over the stump as it travels or keep it tight to not let the fish do what it obviously wants to do. If you have experience working in backwater creeks like this from a raised position and opportunity to make it to the bank after the fish is tired, as to land it, please give me some of your fishing guru wisdom here. I will trial and error based on some good technique ideas. I can’t buy any other reels or poles so what I am looking for is technique and experience in an answer, not equipment upgrades or boat usage. By raised position I mean that I would start out on the road/flow through pipes and maneuver down rocky embankment to the shore to drag him in.
BQ: Am I living a fantasy thinking I might be able to land a 50# flathead in this manner? I am not looking to be ridiculed here peeps. I love fishing and that thing just gave me the most exciting 12 seconds of my fishing experiences and I am just hoping I might be able to learn some ideas to be more prepared from you.

is it safe to eat fish caught from residential lakes?

we fish a man-made lake surrounded by about 100 luxury houses. it is connected to a nearby river by two canals. some people say the fish caught from it (largemouth bass, crappies and catfish) are safe to eat but some others say that, because of the chemicals that people use on the landscaping in people’s backyards that can runoff into the lake, it is not safe. i’ve called the local county health department and they have no information. i don’t see how it’d be any more harmful than eating fish from the farm ponds and sloughs here in the california central valley (which people do all the time).

Boerne Lake, Kendall County, TX?

Has anyone ever been fishing there? I know that there are no motorized boats allowed, I would like to take my kayak. Is it just bass and catfish, or are there any stripers or sandies or crappie?

I have a 1/3 acre pond and want to introduce koi. From what I have learned, they won’t do well with bass.

How would I go about getting all the bass out of the pond? I also have bluegill and catfish. Are they going to impose a problem with any koi as well? I am up for ANY suggestions!!

Thanks!
